GENERAL QUESTIONS

Can I sponsor a child online?
Yes. You can search for a child online by age, gender or location. Sponsoring online is safe and an easy way to begin a life-changing relationship with a child in need. You will be asked to set up an online account, which allows you to view your account information later on.

How is my sponsored child benefiting from my monthly contribution?
The sponsorship money you send is added to that of other people who sponsor children in the same community as your child. Your support enables us to provide benefits such as education, health care, and supplemental food for the children. The costs of keeping records, translating and forwarding letters, providing case workers, and meeting emergencies are also covered. Where appropriate, we work with local churches to give your child the chance to learn about Jesus and his love.

What will I get as a sponsor?
Within two weeks, you should receive a Welcome Kit that includes photos of your sponsored child, information about his/her family and community, and details on how your sponsored child will benefit from sponsorship.

How are children chosen for sponsorship?
Most sponsored children live with family members in a community or village. Children of poor families in the project community are selected to be representatives for the child sponsorship program.

How does my sponsored child learn about Jesus?
In everything we do, our dedicated staff strives to model Jesus' example of love to children and the entire community. Like all of the Body of Christ, our staff members are at various stages of maturity in faith. Yet our staff works hard to ensure that the way they live, the words they use, and the deeds they do point others to a loving God.

How much does it cost to sponsor a child?
Sponsoring a child costs $30 a month. It's a significant commitment, but the incredible difference it makes in the life of a child is invaluable.

What specific benefits does a child receive through sponsorship?
The children receive, among other things: the opportunity to hear the gospel and learn about Jesus; regular Christian training; educational opportunities and help; health care, hygiene training and supplementary food if necessary; a caring and safe Christian environment to grow in self-confidence and social skills; personal attention, guidance and love.

Am I the only sponsor for my sponsored child?
Yes. We assign only one sponsor per sponsored child. This one-to-one relationship provides children with the message that they matter, that they are valuable and that someone outside of their family cares about them and their future.

LETTERS, GIFTS, VISITS

Can I send packages to my sponsored child?
Yes, it is recommended that packages be sent twice a year, at Christmas and for their birthday. (Please remember that Haiti is a third world country, and there is simply no comparison between our abundance and their poverty. Therefore, birthdays are seldom celebrated or even acknowledged, and there are no presents at Christmas time. Packages from sponsors are considered precious, and the child's response is often priceless!)

Can I visit my sponsored child?
Meeting your sponsored child face-to-face can be an exciting and moving event for both of you. And if you ever wish to do so, we're here to help you.

Can I send money directly to my sponsored child?
No, this can not be done. Even though it might be difficult to understand, based on past experience, we have learned there are undercurrents of greed and dishonesty in every culture. To ensure your protection, monies must be sent through your local church or the appropriate mission agency.

How do I write to my sponsored child?
Please feel free to write your sponsored child through the respective mission agency. It is recommended you send a note at the time you send a present at Christmastime or for their birthday. If further correspondence is desired, please contact the mission agency directly.

PROGRESS REPORTS, AND LENGTH OF SPONSORSHIP

When will my sponsored child no longer need assistance?
There is no set age limit for children in our sponsorship program. A child may be in his or her late teens but still need to continue attending school or learn a trade. Also, in many countries children may begin going to school when they are a little older than we are accustomed to in the United States. As long as a sponsored child is in a project, he or she continues receiving assistance.

We will notify you when your sponsored child is able to work and earn a living, or when the family no longer needs help. At that time, we will offer the opportunity for you to sponsor another child.

How long is a child in the sponsorship program?
The goal of child sponsorship is to serve as a passage -- bringing a child to that happy day when sponsorship is no longer necessary. This is the day when this child and his family are ready to move on -- with health, education, training, and hope for the future.

That is the time when a sponsor is offered the opportunity to sponsor another little boy or girl and provide the assistance that child and his or her community needs to become more self-reliant.

The length of sponsorship will be different for each child. That's because sponsorship is affected by many factors: the child's age when sponsorship begins, the family and community's circumstances, progress in the sponsorship project, and more.

One of the most satisfying experiences of sponsorship is watching your child and his or her family become healthy and self-reliant, leaving sponsorship behind. That's the moment when you can take the hand of another child who needs your help.

When or how often will I receive a progress report on my sponsored child?
Reports are mailed twice a year via the mission home office. The target dates are May and November. Usually a sponsor will receive a new picture of their respective child (or children) with the November communique.
